“Posture is the foundation for maintaining overall health, influencing musculoskeletal alignment, neurological signaling and organ function.”
Recent research correlates poor posture to many health concerns which include respiratory issues, chronic pain, diminished cognitive performance and it also affects cardiovascular function.
As people use more digital devices, poor posture is becoming more common.
Research studies confirm that improper posture such as forward head posture and increased Ap curve of the thoracic (mid back) spine are commonly found with neck pain, back pain and general spinal dysfunction.
This posture limits the expansion of the chest wall and can reduce lung capacity thus contributing to fatigue due to lack of oxygen. It was also found that poor posture lowered the ability to perform mental tasks and caused stress on the cardiovascular system.
Chiropractors assess posture by checking head position, shoulder height, uneven pelvis, spinal curves, increased or decreased, posture of foot and ankle.
Treatment includes, chiropractic adjustments to restore joint motion, which can directly help influence proper posture, Corrective exercises to strengthen the spine, educate patients on proper posture while at work, school, sleep and relaxing at home. Use of custom orthotics can help postural stability. The use of cervical support pillows for sleeping can help the cervical curve and reduce chronic neck pain.
